Step 9
We made direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
Two scriptures are referenced with this step, the first is from Matthew 5:23-24 from the Life Recovery Bible is: “So if you are presenting a sacrifice at the altar in the Temple and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you, leave your sacrifice there at the altar. Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to God.”
And the second is found in Luke 6:31 in the Life Recovery Bible: Do to others as you would like them to do to you.
The three core principles of Step 9 include:
- Make Direct Amends: This step involves making direct amends to people who were harmed as a result of one's actions. It encourages individuals to take responsibility for their past behavior and make sincere efforts to reconcile with those they have wronged.
- Except When to Do So Would Injure Them or Others: While making amends is important, this step also emphasizes the need to consider the potential harm that might result from direct communication or reconciliation. In some cases, reaching out directly could be detrimental to the individual or others involved. In such instances, alternative ways of making amends or seeking forgiveness may be considered.
- Continue to Take Personal Inventory and Promptly Admit When Wrong: Step 9 is not a one-time event but part of an ongoing process. It encourages individuals to continue self-reflection and honesty. If mistakes are made in the future, individuals are encouraged to promptly admit them. This ongoing commitment to self-awareness and accountability is crucial for maintaining recovery.
